Why use this tool

Several sizes, one file

By default the ICO contains 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px versions, so the system shows a fitting size everywhere, from tabs to desktops.

No stretched icons

Rectangular images are padded to a square instead of being squeezed, so your logo keeps its proportions.

Transparency carried over

Transparent areas in your PNG stay transparent in the icon, which matters for browser tabs and desktop shortcuts.

Use cases

A classic favicon.ico

Some browsers and tools still look for /favicon.ico at the site root. Build one with 16, 32 and 48 px entries from your logo PNG.

Windows folder and shortcut icons

Windows uses .ico files for custom folder and shortcut icons. Include the 256 px size so the icon stays sharp in large icon views.

Icons for desktop software

Developers packaging a Windows app need an .ico with several resolutions. Create it from the PNG app icon in one step.

Technical details

An ICO file packs several renditions of the same icon so each context can use a matching size: 16 px for browser tabs, 32 and 48 px for desktop shortcuts, and 256 px for large icon views. Pixellin includes 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 px by default, and you can select only the sizes you need. Each entry is stored as PNG inside the ICO, which Windows Vista and later support.

Start from a square PNG at least 256 px wide for the sharpest large sizes. Non-square images are padded to a square rather than stretched, and transparency is kept. Fine detail and thin text disappear at 16 px, so a simplified mark often works better for the smallest sizes. If you need a full favicon set with apple-touch-icon, Android icons and a web manifest, use the Favicon Generator instead.

Frequently asked questions

What sizes should a favicon.ico contain?

16, 32 and 48 px cover browser tabs, bookmarks and Windows shortcuts. Pixellin also includes 64, 128 and 256 px by default; you can untick the larger sizes for a lighter favicon or keep them for desktop icons.

Can I just rename a PNG to .ico?

Renaming changes only the extension, not the file structure. Some programs will reject it or show nothing. A real ICO has a directory of sizes inside, which is what this converter builds from your PNG.

What happens if my image is not square?

Icons are square, so a rectangular PNG is padded with empty space on the shorter sides. Your artwork is never stretched or squashed, and transparent padding keeps the icon looking clean on any background.

How large should my source PNG be?

Use a square PNG of at least 256 × 256 px so the largest icon size is created without enlarging. Simple, bold shapes stay readable at 16 px, so check the small sizes in the preview.
