Why use this tool

Five ways to size

Set a width, a height, an exact width × height, a percentage, or choose a ready-made social media preset.

Sharp downscaling

Multi-step downscaling avoids the jagged edges you get from shrinking a large photo in a single step.

No uploads at all

Images are processed in your browser tab with Web Workers and Canvas. No copy ever reaches a server.

Supported formats

Use cases

Shrink camera photos for sharing

A 6000 × 4000 photo from a camera is far larger than any screen. Bring it down to 2000 px wide before emailing or posting it.

Fit an upload form

A job portal asks for a 600 × 600 profile picture. Enter the exact size and choose Crop to fill so nothing gets stretched.

Prepare website images

Resize hero and article images to the width your layout actually displays, instead of serving a full-resolution original that the browser shrinks.

Technical details

Resizing changes the pixel count, which is different from compressing. A photo cut to half its width and height has a quarter of the pixels, so the file usually shrinks a lot even at the same quality. Two options are on by default: Lock aspect ratio, which keeps proportions, and Don't enlarge smaller images, which leaves an image alone if it's already smaller than the target. Upscaling adds pixels but no real detail, so it rarely helps.

Output can stay in the original format or switch to JPG, PNG or WebP. Resized files don't keep EXIF data such as camera model or GPS location. The orientation is applied to the pixels so photos stay upright, and colors are converted to sRGB. You can resize up to 200 files per batch, each up to 50 MB and 100 megapixels. To process a whole folder with the same settings, see how to batch resize photos.

Your files stay with you

This tool runs entirely inside your browser using Web Workers and WebAssembly. Your images are never uploaded, never stored on a server and never used to train AI. Close the tab and they’re gone. Learn more

Frequently asked questions

Does resizing an image reduce its quality?

Making an image smaller removes pixels, but with multi-step downscaling it usually looks just as sharp at its new size. Enlarging is different: the extra pixels are interpolated, so the result looks softer. That's why Don't enlarge smaller images is on by default.

How do I resize an image without stretching it?

Keep Lock aspect ratio on and set only the width or the height. If you need an exact width and height with a different shape, choose Crop to fill or Fit inside instead of Stretch. Crop trims the edges; Fit inside adds padding.

What's the difference between resizing and compressing?

Resizing changes the dimensions in pixels, such as 4000 × 3000 to 1600 × 1200. Compressing keeps the dimensions and stores the pixels more efficiently. For the smallest files, resize to the size you need first, then compress if necessary.

Can I resize photos on my phone?

Yes. It works in current Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on phones and tablets, with no app to install. On iPhone and iPad, images above about 16.7 megapixels are scaled down automatically to fit Safari's canvas limit, and the result tells you when that happens.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Pixellin resizes images inside your browser tab, so the files never travel to a server and are never used for AI training. They stay in the tab's memory until you remove them or close the page.
