Convert JPG to PNG

Save JPG images as lossless PNG files before you edit, annotate or re-save them. The PNG stores the pixels exactly, so repeated saves won’t degrade them further.

Why use this tool

Stop generation loss

Every JPG save recompresses the image. A PNG copy can be edited and saved many times without adding new artifacts.

Meets PNG-only requirements

Some forms, design tools and print services only accept PNG. Convert a whole folder at once instead of re-exporting each file.

Private by design

Your photos are converted inside the browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, stored on a server or used for training.

Use cases

Editing a photo in several rounds

You plan to crop, annotate and re-save a product photo many times. Working from a PNG copy avoids the extra blockiness each JPG save adds.

A site that requires PNG

An app store listing or online editor rejects JPG uploads. Convert the files to PNG so they pass the format check.

Layering into a design

You’re placing photos into a design file that you’ll export later. PNG keeps the pixels untouched until that final export.

Technical details

Converting JPG to PNG doesn’t restore detail. JPG compression already discarded some information when the photo was first saved, and the PNG keeps exactly what is left, including any existing artifacts. What PNG adds is protection from here on: it’s lossless, so later saves don’t compress the image again. JPG and JPEG are the same format, so both extensions work here.

Expect the file to get bigger, often several times bigger for a camera photo, because PNG compresses photographic noise poorly. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG will be fully opaque too; to make a plain background transparent, use Remove Solid Background. EXIF data such as GPS isn’t copied, the orientation is applied to the pixels, and colors end up in sRGB.

Your files stay with you

This tool runs entirely inside your browser using Web Workers and WebAssembly. Your images are never uploaded, never stored on a server and never used to train AI. Close the tab and they’re gone. Learn more

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. The PNG is a lossless copy of the JPG as it is now, including any blur or blocky artifacts. It can’t recover detail that JPG compression already threw away. It only prevents further loss when you edit and save again.

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?

PNG is lossless and is designed for flat colors and sharp edges. Photos contain fine noise and gradients that PNG can’t compress well, so a 2 MB JPG can easily become a PNG several times that size.

Will the PNG have a transparent background?

No. JPG files can’t store transparency, so there is nothing to carry over and the PNG comes out fully opaque. If the photo has a plain white or solid background, a background removal tool can make that area transparent afterward.

Is JPEG to PNG the same as JPG to PNG?

Yes. JPG and JPEG are two file extensions for the same format. This converter accepts both, and the result is a standard PNG either way.

Can I convert JPG to PNG on my phone?

Yes. It works in current mobile browsers without installing an app. On iPhone and iPad, very large photos above about 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to fit Safari’s canvas limit, and the result tells you when that happens.
