How it works

  1. 01Drop, choose or paste the PNG files to optimize.
  2. 02Choose whether to allow optional palette reduction.
  3. 03Select Process and compare the original and new sizes.
  4. 04Download each PNG or select Download all for a ZIP.

Why use this tool

Every pixel unchanged

OxiPNG rewrites how the data is compressed, not the image itself. Colors, edges and transparency stay exactly the same.

Safe for pixel art

Sprites, pixel art and UI assets keep their exact colors, unlike lossy color reduction that remaps them to a palette.

Optional palette step

An optional palette reduction adds savings, and it is applied only when the result stays visually identical.

Use cases

Game sprites and pixel art

Shrink sprite sheets and tiles without the color shifts lossy tools introduce, so every pixel still lines up exactly.

Design system assets

Optimize PNG icons and UI elements before committing them to a repository; developers get smaller files that match the source exactly.

Archived screenshots

Reduce stored screenshots for support, legal or documentation archives, where each image must remain an exact record.

Technical details

Optimize PNG and Compress PNG solve different problems. Compress PNG is lossy: it reduces the image to 2–256 colors and often saves 50–80%. Optimize PNG is lossless: OxiPNG tries better filter and deflate settings to store the same pixels in fewer bytes. Savings are smaller and depend on how efficiently the original was saved, but the decoded image is identical, including the alpha channel.

Metadata is stripped, which removes embedded data such as editor notes and camera details. Palette reduction is optional and only applied when the result stays visually identical, so leave it off when you need a strict pixel-for-pixel match. Files that are already stored as efficiently as possible are kept unchanged and marked “Already optimized” rather than being made larger. No long-edge cap is needed for most PNG work.

Frequently asked questions

What is lossless PNG optimization?

It makes the file smaller without changing the image. OxiPNG tries different PNG filter and compression settings and keeps the smallest encoding of the same pixels. When you open the result, every pixel, color and transparent area is identical to the original.

Why does Optimize PNG save less than Compress PNG?

Because it doesn’t throw anything away. Compress PNG reduces the number of colors, which often saves 50–80% but alters the image slightly. Optimize PNG keeps every pixel, so it can only remove inefficiency in how the file was stored.

Does PNG optimization keep transparency?

Yes. Lossless recompression stores the same pixels, including the alpha channel, so transparent and semi-transparent areas look exactly as before. Logos and icons can go straight back into a design without any touch-ups.

Which PNGs benefit most from lossless optimization?

Files exported by tools that favor speed over size, such as some screenshot utilities and image editors, often have the most room. A PNG that was already optimized may not shrink at all, in which case Pixellin keeps it and marks it “Already optimized”.
