Technical details
WhatsApp shows profile photos as a circle, so the corners of the square are never visible. The 500 × 500 preset crops to fill around the center, so keep faces and logos in the middle with some space around them. Status updates use the 9:16 shape of a phone screen. The Status preset uses Fit inside rather than a crop, padding with a color or a blurred copy so a landscape photo isn't reduced to a sliver.
For chat images, the preset scales the long edge to 1600 px, so portrait and landscape photos both keep their shape. WhatsApp compresses the photos it sends, and starting from a sensibly sized image means less heavy rescaling on its side. Sizes are current as of 2026 and may change. Resized files don't keep EXIF data, so GPS location isn't shared along with the photo.

What is the right size for a WhatsApp DP?
A square of at least 500 × 500 pixels works well. WhatsApp crops profile pictures to a circle, so keep your face in the middle and leave space around it. The profile preset produces a centered 500 × 500 image ready to set.
How do I set a full photo as my WhatsApp DP without cropping?
WhatsApp needs a square, so a rectangular photo must be cropped or padded. For padding, use exact dimensions at 500 × 500 with Fit inside and a blurred or colored background. Even then, the circle hides the corners, so keep the subject compact.
What size is a WhatsApp status image?
1080 × 1920 pixels, the 9:16 shape of a phone screen. Photos with other shapes are fit inside that frame with padding, so nothing is cut off. Keep text away from the top edge, where your name and the progress bar appear.
Why do my WhatsApp photos look blurry?
WhatsApp compresses images to save data, and very large photos are scaled down heavily along the way. Resizing to 1600 px on the long edge first gives WhatsApp less to shrink. For documents, sending as a file instead of a photo avoids that compression.
Is my photo uploaded when I resize it?
No. The photo is resized on your device, inside the browser, and only reaches WhatsApp when you send it yourself. Pixellin also leaves out EXIF metadata, so the resized file doesn't include GPS location or camera details.
