Convert AVIF to WebP
WebP keeps many of AVIF's advantages, including transparency and good compression, and works in more apps, messengers and content systems. Convert when an AVIF is rejected but you still want a light file.

Why use this tool
Still a small file
WebP compresses far better than JPG or PNG for most images, so moving from AVIF costs much less size than other targets.
Transparency stays
Like AVIF, WebP supports alpha, so transparent graphics keep their clean edges without a background fill.
Fast to work with
WebP encodes and decodes quickly and is accepted by many tools that still do not support AVIF.
Supported formats
Use cases
CMS without AVIF support
Your website platform or theme rejects AVIF uploads but accepts WebP. Convert your images and keep pages light without falling back to JPG.
Stickers and chat images
Messaging apps and sticker tools commonly support WebP. Convert transparent AVIF graphics so they keep their cut-out shape.
Editing pipeline
Some image editors and build tools read WebP but not AVIF. Convert assets first so they open in your existing workflow.
Technical details
AVIF usually compresses photos somewhat better than WebP, so the WebP will often be a little larger, but far smaller than a JPG or PNG of the same picture. The quality slider defaults to 85. Raising it helps with fine textures; lowering it shrinks files further. Both formats support transparency, and transparent areas are carried over. No background color is added, so cut-out shapes stay intact.
Converting between two lossy formats re-encodes the image, so use a reasonably high quality to avoid stacking artifacts. Colors are converted to sRGB and metadata is not kept. Check the size and percentage shown for each file; if a WebP comes out larger than you expected, try a lower quality. The AVIF vs WebP comparison explains when each format makes more sense for a website.

Frequently asked questions
Is WebP better than AVIF?
Not in compression: AVIF is usually a bit smaller at the same visual quality. WebP's advantages are wider support in apps and content systems and faster encoding. Convert to WebP when AVIF is not accepted where you need it.
Will the WebP be larger than my AVIF?
Usually somewhat larger, depending on the image and the quality you choose. It will still be much smaller than a JPG or PNG version, which is why WebP is a good fallback when AVIF cannot be used.
Does converting AVIF to WebP keep transparency?
Yes. WebP supports alpha just like AVIF, so transparent backgrounds and soft edges carry over. No background color is added, unlike a conversion to JPG.
What WebP quality should I use?
The default of 85 suits most photos and graphics. Because the image is being re-encoded from another lossy format, avoid going much below 75, or compression artifacts from both formats can add up and become visible.
