Convert BMP to PNG
PNG keeps every pixel of your bitmap exactly as it is, but compresses the data so the file gets smaller. It is the right choice for screenshots, diagrams, pixel art and scans of text.

How it works
- 01Add BMP files by dropping them, choosing them, or pasting with Ctrl/Cmd+V.
- 02Select Process; PNG needs no quality setting because it is lossless.
- 03Compare the original and new size shown for each image.
- 04Download files individually or grab them all with Download all as a ZIP.
Why use this tool
Pixel-perfect result
PNG compression is lossless. Sharp edges, small text and flat colors come out identical to the original bitmap, with no JPG-style artifacts.
Smaller than BMP
Large areas of flat color compress very well in PNG, so interface screenshots and drawings often shrink to a fraction of the raw bitmap.
Web and app ready
Browsers, documentation tools, design apps and code repositories all handle PNG, while BMP support on the web is patchy.

Use cases
Windows screenshots
Older capture tools and Paint often save as BMP. Convert them to PNG so menus, code and small UI text stay crisp in tickets and docs.
Pixel art and sprites
Game sprites and retro graphics need exact pixels. PNG preserves every hard edge and color, so nothing smears when the art is scaled up later.
Scanned documents
A scanned form or signed page saved as BMP becomes a lossless PNG that keeps text legible and is far easier to attach or archive.
Technical details
BMP and PNG are both able to hold exact pixel data, but BMP usually stores it raw while PNG compresses it losslessly with deflate. The saving depends on content: screenshots, charts and line art with large flat areas often drop to a small fraction of the BMP size, while noisy camera photos shrink much less. No quality is lost in either case, which is why this page has no quality slider.
Colors are converted to sRGB and metadata is not carried over. Because PNG is lossless, it suits files you will edit again: you can crop, annotate and resave without the gradual blurring that repeated JPG saves cause. If the PNG is still larger than you want, run it through Compress PNG, which reduces the color count and typically saves another 50–80% on screenshots and graphics while keeping them sharp.

Frequently asked questions
Is BMP to PNG conversion lossless?
Yes. PNG stores the same pixel values the bitmap contained and only packs them more efficiently. You can convert the PNG back to BMP and get identical pixels, which makes it safe for archiving screenshots, scans and artwork.
Should I choose PNG or JPG for my BMP?
Pick PNG for screenshots, text, diagrams, logos and pixel art, where sharp edges matter. Pick JPG for camera photos, where lossy compression gives a much smaller file and the small loss is not visible.
Why is my PNG still fairly large?
Lossless compression is most effective on flat colors. A detailed photo saved as BMP stays big as PNG because every pixel is different. For photos, JPG is the better target, or you can compress the PNG by reducing its color palette.
Does it work on a Mac or phone?
Yes. The converter runs in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on desktop and mobile, so Mac, iPhone and Android users can open Windows bitmaps and turn them into PNG without installing anything.
