Why use this tool

Largest size picked

When an ICO holds 16, 32, 48 and 256 px versions, you automatically get the biggest and sharpest one.

Transparency kept

Icons rely on transparent corners and edges. PNG preserves them, so the result sits cleanly on any background.

Edit in any app

Many image editors and web tools cannot open ICO. PNG opens everywhere, ready for tweaks or reuse.

Use cases

Recovering a favicon

You have a site's old favicon.ico but lost the source artwork. Extract the largest embedded image as PNG to rebuild or redesign the icon.

Desktop and app icons

Use a Windows program or shortcut icon in documentation, a launcher or a presentation by converting the .ico into a regular PNG.

Checking icon quality

Find out what resolution an icon really contains. If the extracted PNG is only 32 px, you know the file lacks a high-resolution version.

Technical details

The ICO format is a container that can hold several images of the same icon, commonly 16, 32, 48 and 256 px, so Windows can pick the right one for each view. Pixellin uses the largest image inside the file and converts that one to PNG. Smaller embedded sizes are not exported separately. Because the largest entry is usually the most detailed, this gives you the cleanest starting point for editing or upscaling the artwork.

Transparency is preserved, which matters because most icons have transparent corners or shapes. The output size is whatever the largest entry was: a favicon.ico with only 16 and 32 px images gives a 32 px PNG, and it will look soft if you enlarge it. To go back the other way, the PNG to ICO converter builds a multi-size icon from a single image.

Frequently asked questions

Which size do I get from a multi-size ICO?

You get the largest image stored in the file. If the ICO contains 16, 32, 48 and 256 px versions, the PNG will be 256 px. The smaller versions inside the same file are not exported separately.

Why is my PNG so small?

The PNG can only be as large as the biggest image inside the ICO. Many favicon files contain nothing larger than 32 or 48 px. Enlarging such a small icon makes it blurry, so look for the original artwork if you need more resolution.

Does the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. PNG supports transparency, so the icon's transparent areas stay transparent. You can place the extracted icon on a light or dark background without a white box around it.

How can I open an ICO file on a Mac?

Drop it on this page in Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox and convert it to PNG. The PNG opens in Preview and any other app, and the conversion happens locally without installing software.
